DPP Exercises 19 and 20

OCA – Digital Photographic Practice

Project 4: Reality & Intervention – Exercise 19: Correction

The purpose of this exercise was to look at some of the specific tools in processing
software that allow you to make corrections to dust and lens flare in particular.

I selected the following images from my database from 2011.

A Nikon D300 camera and Nikon 18mm-200mm lens were used.

Original Lens Flare

Lens Flare Removed

During this process I used the clone stamp tool and the spot healing brush tool.
The image was taken during an early summer morning and the sun was very bright.

Original Dust Spots

This photograph was taken without knowing that the lens in use had dirt and dust spots
on it. There are some towards the bottom of the photograph and towards the top as well.

Dust Spots Removed

You can see from the images above that by using the clone stamp I have managed to
remove the dirt and dust spots from this photograph.

This exercise has helped me understand how by using the tools within your processing
software can be effective at correcting errors within the photograph. It has also shown
me that by keeping your equipment clean, this process can be kept to a minimum.

Project 4: Reality & Intervention – Exercise 20: Improvement

The purpose of this exercise was to look at some of the specific tools in processing software that allow you to make an image look better in your eyes. Concentrating in local adjustment and altering a specific area of a photograph.

I selected the following images from my database from 2011.

A Nikon D300 camera and Nikon 18mm-200mm lens were used.

Amendment using Quick Selection Tool

You can see from the images above that by using the quick selection tool I was able to
locally select the person within the photograph. I then used the levels adjustment option
to increase the contrast within in photograph of this local area.

This exercise has helped me understand how by using the tools within your processing
software can be effective at correcting errors or adjusting local areas within the photograph.
